Help Marianne Hayward raise funds for vital healthcare

Marianne Hayward
Marianne Hayward, of Verwood, Dorset, will be walking the 500-mile Camino Francés pilgrimage, from the French Pyrenees across northern Spain, starting in April 2008.
Money raised through sponsorship will go to the Anglican charity USPG and – more specifically – to the USPG-supported St James’ Hospital, which is providing healthcare for impoverished communities in Mantsonyane, Lesotho.

Aged 75, Marianne says the walk – from St-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain – will take between six to eight weeks.
With a friend for company, Marianne will be carrying all her provisions in a rucksack and staying in refugios – cheap accommodation for pilgrims – en route.
Mariane writes:‘I have a particular concern for the plight of African women who suffer from fistulas – these are tears which occur during complicated births and leave woman incontinent. Women with fistulas are often rejected by their families and become social outcasts, but with a simple operation they can then retrieve their dignity and return to their community.
‘St James’ Hospital – alongside much other vital work – is running a programme to help people who suffer from this condition, helping to rebuild shattered lives.
‘So please dig deep! I shall be self-funding, so every penny I raise can go to wherever it is needed. We are so fortunate in our country. Let us try to make a few people’s lives more bearable.’
